At the same time, this is the tragic story of a man who, despite his wartime service, was eventually arrested, stripped of his security clearance, and forced to undergo a humiliating treatment program-all for trying to live honestly in a society that defined homosexuality as a crime. Hodges also tells how this work was directly related to Turing’s leading role in breaking the German Enigma ciphers during World War II, a scientific triumph that was critical to Allied victory in the Atlantic. Hodges tells how Turing’s revolutionary idea of 1936-the concept of a universal machine-laid the foundation for the modern computer and how Turing brought the idea to practical realization in 1945 with his electronic design. Andrew Hodges, who teaches mathematics at Wadham College, University of Oxford (he is also an active contributor to the mathematics of fundamental physics). In November a major motion picture starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing will be released, based on the classic biography by Dr. It is only a slight exaggeration to say that the British mathematician Alan Turing (1912–1954) saved the Allies from the Nazis, invented the computer and artificial intelligence, and anticipated gay liberation by decades-all before his suicide at age 41. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments The breakdown book ba paris![]() ![]() If you can’t trust yourself, who can you trust? Language includes one "badass" and a few instances of "butt" and "boob." Some middle graders tease a peer for having a crush on another student. Some encounters with scorned spirits who haven't fully crossed over into the afterlife might be scary for younger readers, as might the tiny beating human heart in a vial that is a magical representation of Riley's sister, Hattie. Riley's world is full of cool elemental magic, mysterious creatures, ghosts, and spirits, and a worthy cause to fight for. Riley's journey is all about finding out what family, sisterhood, friendship, and identity mean. She's endured lots of unfair treatment because of being different, including being called names and not being considered for things (invisibility). She's grown up an outsider - the metaphor of difference and how it has impacted her sense of identity and belonging is strong. It stars Riley, an adopted and non-magical younger sister who's about to turn 13. ![]() It's a middle grade fantasy adventure that merges Korean mythology and folklore with a modern setting - in Los Angeles' Koreatown. This is a solidly written book with intense characters and some pretty hot sex scenes. Neither man will deny Marisol her final request…even if it means facing their past, working together, sharing the room they had as teens, getting to know one another now as men, and discovering that the brief friendship they shared has altered into a consuming, abiding love. Jonah can’t refuse, even though he knows he will have to face Christian once again.Īlthough they haven’t seen each other in years, neither man has forgotten the other. Upon her death fifteen years later, Marisol leaves a request that Jonah come home and help Christian renovate her house. Jonah stayed in contact with his foster mother Marisol, but refused to hear stories about Christian, and made the woman promise never to tell Christian anything about him. Jonah knew the kid with the crush on him would be better off forgetting that Jonah ever existed. Jonah never forgot Christian, even though he cut off all contact with the boy. ![]() That all ended when the cops came and arrested Jonah, stealing him from Christian’s uncertain world. ![]() Foster brothers for a short time as teens, Christian developed a massive crush on Jonah, his tough, older roommate. Non-traditionally sexy - so if you are one of the "traditional family values" crowd, this is probably not for you. I suspect more will be revealed in subsequent books. Lots of hints, but nothing specific enough to use as evidence. It could as easily be before now or anytime in the future. A breath of fresh air after a long run of Tolkien wannabe tales. This is the first book I've read in quite a while that has not been derivative of someone else's foundation story. No elves, wizards, or other standard fantasy elements. ![]() ![]() Not traditional magic or traditional magicians. It sound depressing, but it isn't, not at all. I will be very happy to recommend this one to everyone who likes speculative fiction and very interested to read the next episodes! The description is a bit deceptive. Robin Miles is one of those great narrators who becomes the book so that you don't notice her at all because she is the characters, she is the story. Very well performed and beautifully - poetically - written. It wanders far and then comes back to tie up loose ends. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Weems kitchen table series![]() ![]() In a career spanning over 30 years, she has investigated family relationships, cultural identity, sexism, class, political systems and the consequences of power. It's an experimental work for sure, that aims to make the reader relate to the confusion, pain and remorse that Spawn himself feels throughout his journey in the book, and it's a goal that's quickly met and exceeded. "Hellspawn" blends a unique minimalistic art style with a deep and remorseful story to try to create an atmosphere of pain.
